Faculty Strength

The Jewelry Department has a high-quality, professionally competent and innovation-oriented teaching team that attaches great importance to school-enterprise cooperation. The department currently has six full-time teachers and one experimental technician, including four teachers with doctoral degrees and three with master’s degrees. They graduated from well-known universities in China and abroad, including Nanjing University, China University of Geosciences, and Birmingham City University in the United Kingdom.

The teaching team has a strong professional background and a well-structured disciplinary composition, covering geology, gemology, design and related fields. The team includes three associate professors and four lecturers. Most full-time teachers hold “dual-qualified” credentials, including the National Registered Jewelry and Jade Quality Inspector Certificate (CGC) and the Gemmological Institute Certificate of China University of Geosciences (GIC).

Educational Objectives

The program aims to cultivate high-quality application-oriented professionals with sound humanistic literacy, strong practical abilities, basic innovation capabilities, professional ethics, and teamwork spirit. Students are expected to master the identification and design of gemstones, jade, jewelry, and jewelry-related materials, understand international trends in the jewelry industry, and meet the requirements of the “dual-certificate integration” talent cultivation model.

Program Features

Gemology and Materials Technology is an interdisciplinary program integrating geology, materials science, humanities, and art, with strong interaction between natural sciences and social sciences. It is a key and brand program of Jinling Institute of Technology, with nearly 30 years of educational experience. It is currently the only public undergraduate program of its kind in East China. The program is widely recognized in the jewelry industry as “the cradle of jewelry talent cultivation in Jiangsu” and “the cradle of gemological education in the Yangtze River Delta.”

In the 2025 China University Ranking for Gemology and Materials Technology among application-oriented universities released by the Alumni Association, the program ranked first nationwide. It has also been reported several times by Xinhuanet, Xuexi Qiangguo, Jiangsu media and other platforms.

The curriculum covers identification and testing of gemstones, jade, and precious metal jewelry; appreciation and appraisal; design and manufacturing; and commercial promotion, enabling students to adapt to various future positions in the jewelry industry. The program actively promotes open education and continuously enhances its core competitiveness. Relying closely on industry and enterprise partners, it carries out comprehensive and multi-level school-enterprise cooperation under the goals of joint talent cultivation, shared employment responsibility, and resource sharing. In response to industry development needs, the program has proposed the innovative concept of “dual-certificate integration” and continues to deepen school-enterprise collaboration.

Career Prospects

Graduates may pursue further studies in geology, materials science, design, and related fields at universities such as Nanjing University, China University of Geosciences, Chengdu University of Technology, and Kunming University of Science and Technology.

Through the program’s school-enterprise cooperation network, graduates have priority opportunities to work in public institutions and government quality inspection departments in commodity inspection and testing. They also have access to high-quality employment opportunities recommended by partner enterprises, including industry-leading companies such as TESIRO, Baoqing Silver House, and China Gold. Career fields include gemstone and jade identification, pledge and pawn appraisal, enterprise management, investment and sales, jewelry design, and manufacturing. In the past two years, the employment rate has reached 100%, with a student-to-position supply-demand ratio of 1:5 and an average starting salary of over RMB 6,000 per month.
